EIB Reading
Program

About

This training supports Bilingual Intercultural Educators (Spanish acronym EIB) in the Bay Islands, across the Bay Islands to implement a Rading Program in their classroom. After many years of providing bookmobile services to schools in Roatan and Santos Guardiola using the story-in-a-bag method,, we introduced such method to local EIB teachers to implement a reading program in their classroom. This dynamic workshop strengthens  their  English teaching  language skills, the  implementation of bilingual reading programs, and intercultural instruction. The sessions equip local educators with practical tools, strategies, and culturally relevant content to better meet the unique and diverse needs of their students.

Mission

The initiative aims to enhance bilingual and intercultural education in the Bay Islands by equipping EIB teachers with effective reading strategies. Utilizing the "story-in-a-bag" method, teachers can improve English instruction and foster culturally relevant literacy practices, creating inclusive learning environments that celebrate local diversity and boost bilingual reading skills among students.

Impact

Since 2024, 63 Bilingual Intercultural Education (EIB) teachers in the Bay Islands have undergone training to develop effective reading programs. This initiative has enabled educators to create tailored reading cycles and culturally relevant lesson plans. Several EIB schools have launched pilot programs, marking a significant step in improving bilingual literacy and intercultural learning among students.
