Ocean Literacy
& Blue Schools

About

As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental education, the Ocean Literacy Program empowers Bay Islands teachers through hands-on conservation education that connects students to the vital role coral reefs play in their communities and inspires them to become active stewards of their coastal ecosystems.

Mission

Education is the most effective means to preserve the Bay Islands’ natural legacy. Our purpose is to equip educators and students with practical skills, experiential learning, and a genuine commitment to marine conservation. By empowering local educators  to undertake impactful, enduring efforts, we are laying the groundwork for a resilient and sustainable future for coral reefs and coastal ecosystems.

Impact

Our workshops reached 147 students across the Bay Islands, including 31 students from the Merchant Marine Program and the Tourism High School Program. The curriculum explored the ecological importance of coral reefs, human-driven threats to marine ecosystems, and practical local conservation strategies.
With the support of local marine companies, we enhanced experiential learning within the Merchant Marine Program, providing students with valuable hands-on knowledge that complements their academic studies.
A key highlight of our work is the partnership with the Global Blue Schools Network  of UNESCO , which supports the implementation of the Blue Schools program throughout the Bay Islands. These “blue schools” play a vital role in fostering environmental awareness and sustainability practices among both students and educators. Together, we are nurturing a generation of informed, engaged citizens committed to protecting the Bay Islands’ unique marine biodiversity.
