Math Teacher Training

About

Building on the success of the 2022–2023 initiative math workshop, the Math Teacher Training  Program focused on scaling and sustaining improvements in math instruction across the Bay Islands in collaboration with the Bay Islands Department of Education and the Professional Development Office. The  approach introduces a peer-led training model, where a cohort of local math specialists are trained to lead workshops for teachers from grades 1 through 9. The program emphasizes innovative  strategies, step-by-step instruction, and practical classroom application, all designed to strengthen foundational math teaching skills of educators and promote active learning of their students.

Mission

By investing in ongoing professional development and fostering local leadership  of Math teachers through a Train the Trainers model, the program seeks to create more engaging and effective learning environments that nurture strong numeracy skills in students throughout the Bay Islands. The program aims  to empower educators with the skills, strategies, and support they need to deliver high-quality, student-centered math instruction.

Impact

More than 256 teachers across the Bay Islands have participated in peer-led workshops, significantly extending the reach and impact of the program. These sessions, led by trained 14  local math specialists, focused on practical strategies for improving instruction in key areas such as fractions, operations, and problem-solving.
Throughout the year, teacher feedback pointed to several important outcomes: greater clarity and structure in lesson planning, increased confidence in delivering math content, and noticeably stronger student engagement. The peer-led model also fostered collaboration and professional growth among educators, reinforcing a shared commitment to continuous improvement in math education.
